Cash for Cans

April 1-30

The City of Irvine is participating in the national Cans for Cash Recycling Challenge April 1-30. Irvine residents, schools and businesses are encouraged to participate by depositing aluminum cans in curbside recycling containers or by taking the cans directly to the Waste Management Recycling Center located at 16122 Construction Circle East in Irvine. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Irvine will be competing against other cities in the nation for up to $100,000 in cash awards – money the city has pledged to Human Options, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence rebuild their lives. Irvine Multicultural Association International Film Series (Lakeview Senior Center)

Enjoy a celebrated French film that depicts the life of a famous French designer. It tells the story of how her early life and inspirations developed into the style of a famous Parisian fashion house and made her a fashion icon. English subtitles. Hike with the Mayor, City Council

Saturday, April 21 (Irvine Ranch Water District San Joaquin Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary)

Residents are invited to join Mayor Sukhee Kang and the City Council this spring for a morning hike at the Irvine Ranch Water District San Joaquin Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. The hike is planned for 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21. It is open to the public and will last about 90 minutes. As part of the City’s open space and Healthy City Healthy Planet initiatives, the hike is designed to provide real-time access with healthy benefits. Tax Assistance for Irvine Residents

Through April 16

The City of Irvine, along with the Legal Aid Society of Orange County, United Way and Orange County One-Stop, is offering tax preparation service at no cost to taxpayers who earned less than $58,000 in 2011. Qualifying taxpayers who live, work or attend school in Irvine are eligible to receive help completing and electronically filing their tax returns through April 16. Korean Culture Night 2012

Korean Culture Night (KCN) is returning to UC Irvine for its second year in the biggest collaborative effort between the Korean communities on campus. Truth Values – One Girl’s Romp Through M.I.T’s Male Math Maze

Nonbinary algorithms and sexism collide in Truth Values, a painfully funny production about one woman’s struggle to navigate the male math maze. Inspired by the actual experiences of actress-playwright and “recovering mathematician” Gioia  De Cari, this hilarious one-woman show follows de Cari’s misadventures as female Ph.D candidate in the elite boys club of the M.I.T. math department.

Created as a response to former Harvard President Lawrence Summers’ now infamous suggestion that women are less represented than men in the sciences because of innate gender differences, De Cari brings to life more than 30 characters in a true-life tale that offers a humorous, scathing, insightful, and ultimately uplifting look at the challenges of being a professional woman  in a male-dominated field. The traffic study done by RK Engineering has done and is posted  here.  At the January meeting the Board discussed imposing a 35 MPH speed limit on Summit Park Drive.  Although all Board members are in favor of taking additional measures to reduce speeds on Summit Park Drive, there was not a consensus on posting speed limits on Summit Park Drive. The Board decided to study the matter further and consider it again at a later meeting.  Do you have an opinion that you would like to share with the Board regarding posted speed limits on Summit Park Drive? ]]> As you may recall, last year the Board began consideration of a management policy for our community’s most valuable and expensive resources: our common area trees. These are the trees located on our hillsides and along our streets and center medians.  As our young community continues to mature, so do our trees, and in recent years we have experienced an increasing number of complaints from residents that association trees are blocking the views from their homes.  In some cases residents have even taken matters into their own hands, and moved to trim or top association trees, which is illegal and can subject offenders to fines and even criminal prosecution.  In response to residents’ concerns, there is strong support on the Board for a tree management policy that will take into account the needs of all stakeholders, including residents who want to enjoy the beautiful views available in our community, as well as their downhill neighbors who want to enjoy the screening and privacy afforded by a lush canopy of trees.   If you have views you would like to share, let the Board know how you feel about these matters.  Your feedback is very much appreciated.
